FIELD-DAY this week-end…
This is a reminder message that the annual Ham Radio Field-Day event happens this week-end.
This year the Field-Day site is Reservoir Hill Park in Byron.
An easy way of getting there is to head west bound on Commissioners Road, roughly 1.5km west of the Wonderland Road intersection. The entrance will be on the north side (right side) and has a set of large metal gates.
I have placed a map online, look for the big red dot in the middle:

Timings: Officially, the “on air” portion of field-day is from 2pm Saturday until 2pm Sunday.
Saturday:
· 10am: The early birds will start to arrive around 10am. These will be the people with tents and trailers and their main interest will be setting up of the camp-site.
· 12 noon: By now we should be erecting antennas and setting up the radio portion of the camp site.
· 2pm: Start Time! Hopefully by this time all of our antennas are up and we have operators on the radios!
Sunday:
2pm: Time to tear it all down, pack it in for another year.
Related information to increase the fun factor:
The main purpose of field-day is to go and spend some time with a group of ham buddies and have some fun with the radios. A big batch of spaghetti will be served up Saturday and Dave (ve3eay) will make a large batch of his world famous scrambled eggs on Sunday morning.
If you have a tool box of some small hand tools, please throw it in the back of your car; most likely some tools will be required to help put up the wire antennas and such. A small soldering iron would also be a good idea. If you have a bow & arrow and wished you had a place to use it, bring it by at noon to help get the wires high into the trees.
A group of us will be installing some 2.4 ghz linking equipment to see if we can establish a full Internet connection to all computers on site.
Remember that Field-Day operates under the supervision of the London Amateur Radio Club which means our call-sign will be used. The side-effect of this is ANY ONE can drop-by and spend some time and talk on the air (even HF), even non-hams.
Whenever you have an event like this, some people are assigned to coordinate the activities of specific frequencies at the site. These people are called “band captains”.
The 2004 LARC Field-Day band captains are:
Glen (VE3ARC) – 10m
Don (VA3DWB) – 15m
Don (VE3MGD) – 40m
Archie (VE3PTV) – 80mIf you are interested in operating any of the radios on site, see you of the band captains to set you up.
Some general info about field-day…
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the global event, here is a brief description:

Last meeting before the break…
The June general meeting was the last meeting before the summer. We will resume our monthly meetings in September. I’ll send out an email message in advance reminding people and at that time I will give some details about the topic of the evening.
Ham of the year – VA3DWB is One Cool Ham!
Every year the club likes to recognize a ham that has been a leader in promoting the hobby in the area. This year we would like to thank Don, VA3DWB for his support and participation with the new hams and the various Nets.
Closing remarks…
Although we not having any general meetings, ham radio will not be dead for the summer. The various evening nets will still continue as usual.
The club repeater on 147.06 is scheduled to be powered off next week for some upgrades. We expect the outage to take a few days while the new equipment is tested at an off-site location. During that time the repeater may be used but it will not be running with the normal antennas. If you hear it on the air being tested, please jump in and give some feed-back.
As already stated, we resume general meetings at the beginning of September. Don’t forget to plan for the LARC ham-fest in September. Check out our webpage for more information.
Take care, see you at FIELD DAY, de ve3pzr qrt.
