A good sized group of hams turned out for the tour. Thanks to Past President David Young VE3EAY for arranging this (too bad you had to work and missed it :-)
This is the main CFPL studio where the local news, weather and sports originates. We were actually there during the LIVE news, weather and sports broadcast, and had to really be quiet.
Our tour guide Patti shows us the consoles where all the data for producing the weather reports is collected. They even have their own weather radar!
The meteorologist and weather reporters use the "blue screen" technique, where their live action is superimposed on the computer generated maps and graphics. They can see what the final result looks like on a monitor just off screen.
The Windsor station CHWI has its own separate studio
This is the studio control area where the producer and the production staff mix live and recorded data for the on air production. Should give you some great ideas for improving the layout of your ham shack!
This is the "on air" control center where live, satellite and recorded data is mixed and sent out on the air for CFPL London, CHWI Windsor and CKNX Wingham stations. This cool technology is all computer controlled, the operator here finds it like flying a jumbo jet, "hours of boredom punctuated by seconds of sheer terror" when something goes wrong - like a direct lightning hit on the tower (which can take the computers off line).
This is the FM station "STAR 102.3"
All in all a really great tour. Too bad they would not let us climb the tower :-)
